The Giveaway Standard
Mastering community growth without the Discord TOS risk.
In the modern Discord era, growth is a science. While it’s tempting to follow servers into the world of "Invite Walls," you're playing a dangerous game with Discord’s Platform Manipulation Policy. Here is how to run professional, high-converting giveaways that won't get your server nuked.
The "Illegal" Zone
Platform Manipulation
Discord strictly forbids "purchasing" growth through artificial engagement. If your giveaway requires any of the following, your server is currently at risk of permanent deletion:
- The Invite Wall: "Must have 3 invites to enter." (Direct Violation)
- The J4J Trap: Requiring users to join a partner's server to qualify.
- Gated Verification: Forcing users to verify via Oauth2 bots that automatically join servers for them.
- Unsolicited DMs: Incentivizing users to DM strangers to get entries.
The "Legal" Growth Path
Instead of forcing growth, incentivize retention. These methods are 100% compliant and lead to a more active community.
Level & XP Requirements
Require users to reach a specific level (e.g., Level 5) before they can enter. This forces them to chat and bond with your community.
Message Thresholds
Set a requirement for "50 messages in the last 7 days." This ensures the winner is an actual community member, not a bot or a temporary account.
Safe Infrastructure
1. Use Verified Industry Bots
Stick to verified, public bots that strictly follow Discord's Developer Terms. Recommended tools include GiveawayBot or Givvy. These bots have been vetted and will not offer "Invite Tracking" for giveaways, ensuring your server stays compliant.
Custom Bot Risks
If you are coding a private bot for your server, you are not exempt from the TOS. Discord’s API monitors "Gateway Events" for abnormal join patterns. If your custom bot is found to be facilitating "Invite-for-Reward" schemes:
- The Bot will be disabled: Your custom application will lose API access immediately.
- Developer Ban: Your personal Discord account (as the bot owner) may be permanently disabled.
- Server Deletion: Any server using the bot for platform manipulation will be flagged for termination.
